About Us

Essenza di Romagna Ltd., trading as ‘The Garden of Italy’ is a family owned UK registered business dedicated to the promotion of beautifully presented quality wines and products specifically from the Romagna Region of Northern Italy which forms the eastern part of the Emilia Romagna province. It is in Romagna that we have our family routes and these date back to war torn Italy where in 1944/45 a young RAF private from 454 Squadron met a girl from the enchanting fishing port of Cesenatico on the Adriatic coast. These were our parents who later spent their lives in the United Kingdom but our connections with the Romagna region have remained strong through close family ties and these family members are now very proud to help us promote this rich and diverse region.

I left my home town of Torquay in South Devon to complete an Economic History and Economics degree at Bristol University in 1970/73 followed by a career in banking and finance which took me to London and I now live in Fleet, Hampshire with my wife Farida and daughter Francesca. We spend as much time as possible in Italy, either visiting family and friends or just soaking up the culture and lifestyle. Every region is so unique and we have enjoyed Italy from the mountains of Aosta in the Italian Alps to the riches of Sicily in the south. Food and wine have always been an important part of our Italian experience and the knowledge gained of the wines and produce of Romagna, together with our love of the region, has been instrumental in our desire to showcase these through “The Garden Of Italy”

I have been at the helm of LGF Events Marketing and PR Ltd as Managing Director specialising in Business Development, Marketing and Sales for over 20 years. The main thrust of my work has been specialising in B2B, retail business, construction, education and third sector, working in-house with clients to develop and manage bespoke Sales and Marketing Development Projects/Campaigns, PR, Media Advertising, Sponsorship and Event Management. I initially met Rob Oades through business during his time as the Commercial Director of HSBC Bank. Since then over the last 11 years our families have become great friends. Having grown up surrounded by the English countryside and its ways particularly horse riding in the beautiful Devonshire hills, and along the rugged English coastline, I fell in love with Italy when I stayed in Cesenatico, a small coastal town. I share the other Directors’ passion and love of the people, scenery, Italian wine and delicious food.
Our values lead us to deliver the best quality service to our clients. We are proud of our work and enjoy what we do best, delivering and presenting quality products and events.

I was born in Cesena and have spent my whole life in the Romagna region and take great pride in its history and culture. I am a practising building surveyor specialising in design and consultancy with specific interest in the preservation and conservation of historical buildings. The love of our culture which is linked so closely to the passion for good food and wine is the simple story of our family and the philosophy of our lives.
My knowledge of wine is something that I have gained over many years by a close association with vineyards and wineries in Romagna. It is the embodiment of our region and the wines from our sangiovese grape have the power to take us back in time; to awaken the desire to savour the sunshine and contagious joy of Romagna – the land and its people.
The Garden of Italy is our attempt to identify high quality artisan products from our region and to convey the pride taken in their production. It is a story based upon natural ingredients and honest quality. The making of the wine and the drinking of the wine – in friendship!
Our family calls upon our great knowledge of this region to bring together the unique characteristics of this land and to bring our wines to your table.

I am actively pursuing new opportunities to expand my understanding of, and enjoyment of, quality wines. Always on the lookout for something different that also offers good value for the investment. Delighted to be part of the team responsible for introducing Montaia wines to the UK.

The Garden of Italy has been a fantastic opportunity for me to develop and apply my skills in an area I am passionate about. The creation of the website pushed me to learn new coding languages and apply my theoretical knowledge in ways I had not thought of before. I hope to develop this site further and continue to be involved in the Garden of Italy.

Montaia

"Sangiovese is to Italy what Cabernet is to France: wines that express the vine growing and wine making identity of an entire country."
